Maltese Banknotes and Coins


This section contains information on the Maltese banknotes focusing on the 4th and 5th series and Maltese decimal coins.

Although the Maltese currency ceased to be legal tender on 31 January 2008, Maltese banknotes in the 5th Series and coins can still be exchanged for euro at the Central Bank of Malta, without any additional cost. The Central Bank of Malta will continue to exchange Maltese lira banknotes into euro until 31 January 2018 and coins until 1 February 2010.

The Central Bank of Malta would also like to remind the public that the Lm10 in the 4th Series Maltese banknotes are exchangeable for euro, without any additional cost, at the Central Bank of Malta until 13th September 2010.
