Deputy Governor reconfirmed - Mr David A Pullicino FCIB has been reconfirmed as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Malta under the Central Bank of Malta Act for a further five-year term with effect from 1 September 2008. Mr Pullicino has been Deputy Governor since 1 July 1999.

Panel Exhibition

A panel exhibition on the 40-year history of the Central Bank of Malta and the ten years of EMU may be viewed during normal office hours at the main building of the Bank at Pjazza Kastilja.
Central Bank of Malta Quarterly Review – Second Issue 2008 - The Central Bank of Malta has published the second issue of its Quarterly Review for 2008, which analyses economic and financial developments both in Malta and abroad during the first quarter of 2008 and going into the second. In the light of Malta’s entry into the euro area at the beginning of this year, the Review takes on a new format. It includes a separate analysis of the euro area economy while the chapters previously covering the Maltese economy are amalgamated into one chapter. A new section is introduced in this chapter focusing on indicators of competitiveness.

Consultative Paper on Euro Banknote Recycling - The Central Bank of Malta is inviting public comment on a new legal framework to regulate the redistribution, sorting and reissue (i.e. ‘recycling’) of euro banknotes. The proposed new framework will primarily affect banks, financial institutions and other organisations that recycle euro banknotes on a professional basis in Malta, and will oblige these to adopt Eurosystem-wide standards in performing authenticity and quality tests on any banknotes that are to be redistributed to the public.

Exchange of Maltese lira at the Central Bank of Malta - The Central Bank of Malta will continue to exchange, at the irrevocably fixed conversion rate and without charge, Maltese lira coins until 1 February 2010 and Maltese lira banknotes until 31 January 2018.

The public is also asked to take note that exchanges are conducted only at the Bank’s Annex at St James’s Counterguard, Valletta, which is easily accessible from the bus terminus at City Gate.

Consultative Paper on Euro Banknote Recycling

On 28 July 2008, the Central Bank of Malta launched a Consultative Paper to advise the Bank’s future policy initiatives in relation to the regulation of banknote recycling (redistribution, sorting and re-issue) and to initiate discussion and collect the views of stakeholders with regard to the Bank’s proposal for a Directive implementing the Eurosystem Banknote Recycling Framework, which has to be in force by 1 January 2009 (with a transitional period for compliance ending before 1 January 2010). The consultation process will run until the end of September.

Anniversaries of the CBM, ESCB, ECB and Eurosystem

In 2008 the Central Bank of Malta is celebrating its 40th anniversary while the European System of Central Banks (ESCB) and the European Central Bank (ECB) are commemorating their 10th anniversary. Furthermore the euro and the Eurosystem will be ten years old on 1 January 2009.
